Overthinking

Have you ever found yourself in a spiral of thoughts that you can’t seem to shake?  You spend too much time thinking about things, and you overthink a decision or spend hours agonizing over a problem that doesn’t even exist. Or maybe you just can’t seem to turn your brain off at night and end up lying in bed for hours, wide awake and stressed out. It’s a problem we all know too well, and we’ve all been there – agonizing over a decision for what feels like hours on end.

That feeling of being so lost in thought that you can’t focus on what’s happening around you. You’re overthinking, and it usually can cause paralysis by analysis. You overanalyze anything. Spent too much time thinking, planning, analyzing, thinking some more, and never actually taking any action to get started. This causes us so much stress, anxiety, depression, and it makes us feel like we’re a failure. It means that we’re not mentally strong enough to overcome these thoughts. But it’s okay. A lot of people do. While it may feel like this is a never-ending cycle, there are ways to break out of it.

Everything we do starts with the first step. If you want to make a change in your life, the first step is always figuring out where to start. So don’t be afraid to take that first step – it’s always the hardest one! Just start, whether it’s fitness or eating better, or something you’ve always wanted to do. Sometimes we just think, “who am I to do these things,” But remember that every expert was once a beginner. However, over time, we get better. Learning, practicing, a lot of setbacks and failures, but these keep moving us forward. Whatever we are working on will never be completed in just one sitting because everything takes time. It’s okay to make mistakes, to get stuck sometimes, but we should never stop there. Overthinking will just make us do nothing, so we should never let our emotions and thoughts have control over us.

You just go with what you got. Take the word “perfect” out of your vocabulary, and focus on the things you can change. Keep working on it, and know in your head that it will always be a work in progress. Keep on learning and try new ideas to figure out how to implement them. So don’t be too hard on yourself – you’re only human after all. We’re constantly evolving, growing, and changing. Remember, you are always on your way to becoming who you want to be. Just keep moving forward!
